MISC problems that happened over a period of a few weeks:

wrong wires

The first started Dec 15 2005. We moved from our house to an apartment... I wont go into any details other than to say it was more financially sound...anyway....when whe where home I had two computers joined with a crossover cable, they where in two separate rooms but they where only a few feet apart.

When we moved here in our apartment, I discovered that I needed an extra long wire to join my computers. I could not get an extra long crossover cable so I had to go back to my hub with a ordinary network wire. I ended up buying a 50 foot wire at the cost of $46 dollars. I know there are wireless solutions but that was not in my budget.

Its not actually 50 feet from one room to the next but to keep it out of the way, to stop people from tripping over it I had to weave it in and out and behind furniture. I hooked up the wires and set up the networking within Windows this was actually a week before I got my internet. It seemed to work at first but when I did get my internet my network wasn't working at all.

When I set it up, at first, it was just displaying my old settings which I mistook as it was working, it wasn't. As usual I first assumed its was a sofware conflict of some kind. After checking, uninstalling and then reinstalling components, I determined it wasn't a softwrare issue but possibly a hardware one. My new $46 dollar wire immediately came to mind. I was told when I bought it that it was tested and working.

I decided to fool around with the wires and how I had them plugged into my hub until I found a combination that worked. Sure enough it was a wire plugged into the wrong place that was causing the problem.

My current Network Setup:

One computer with 2 ethernet cards, one card is hooked up directly to the uplink port of my hub with a crossover cable, the other card is hooked up to my cable modem with a ordinary network wire. The second computer is hooked up to my hub with a the 50 foot wire previously mentioned. The second computer only has one ethernet connection.

blocked IE

A few days ago a guy called me, he couldn't get online. He has a new DELL computer with Windows XP. He could dial-up but couldn't go online otherwise. It sounded like a familiar problem (see lspfix). But I noticed something unusual about this situation.

Normally, in these cases all internet activity is blocked but in this case, his anti-virus and adware programs could access the internet and be updated. So I tried a little experiment and installed another web browser, Mozilla. It had no problem accessing the internet.

The solution to this problem came before I went online, 'Norton Firewall', asked if permission was granted to allow Mozilla to access the internet of course I said yes, but I was told that something like this came up before. They did not understand and apparently they accidentally blocked Internet Explorer from accessing the internet. So it was only a matter of going into the options for Norton Firewall and enableing access for Internet Explorer.

I don't use 'Norton Internet Security' so I will provide this link which includes a graphical description on how to fix this problem:

This link deals with a particular prrogram called Web Accelerator but you can use it as an example to help you set up Internet Explorer program:

no nudges

I have had this problem 3 times in the past with 3 different computers and 3 different operating systems. It involves MSN Messenger. I lost the abililty to hear nudges.

I have a habit of turning off all background 'baggage', that is, anything working unneccessarily in the background, for better performance. Turning of 'sound schemes' is one of them. Apparently I also removed the ability to hear sounds and nudges as well.

Simple problem to fix:
