How To Change Your Hotmail Password

A guy called me and he wanted to change his Hotmail password. Apparently he gave it to a number of people and now to many know. A word of Wisdom: DON'T SHARE YOUR PASSWORD WITH ANYONE!! That said, here's how to do it.

Note: Hotmail prefers to be called Windows Live, these days, basically its all the same. Also Microsoft has this bad habit of changing things around, A LOT! (supposedly for our benefit). So these instructions are current as of 5:00 PM Tuesday, March 18, 2008.

First sign into your email account like you would normally do. You can click on the little email icon in MSN Messenger; You can go to login.live.com; or mail.live.com; or even www.hotmail.com All take you to the same place.

Sign in (or if you don't have an account sign up).

Once you sign in at the top-right hand corner you will see the word options. Click on it. (note: my images may slightly differ from what you see)

You will see a section called Manage Your Account, click on the blue line that says View and edit your personal information. You should see your basic account info.

You will se Password reset information and a line similar to this:

Password xxxxxx change .

Just click on the blue word change.

A new window will pop up where you will have to put in your old password then your new one. You will have to retype the new one to confirm it. Then just click on save, and that's it. Next time you sign in just remember to use your new password.

Sorry, at the time of this writing, the password reset service was not working properly. I got a message to try later, so a screen shot is not available.

To Block Unwanted Emails

My Brother called, and wanted to know how to block unwanted emails. So here we go.

Sign in and select Options (see above). Then under the Junk e-mail section click on Safe and blocked senders

Click on Blocked Senders. This will open up a new window/tab. Just type in the email address you want blocked and then click on Add to list.

You can also remove e-mails addresses from the blocked list if you accidentally blocked someone that you didn't mean to block.

Vista File associations

http://ask-leo.com/where_did_file_associations_go_in_windows_vista.html

My Brother-in-law called me. He had got a document as an extension (it was from someone he knew), and couldn't open it.

It had a .doc extension. He tried to open it but couldn't. Apparently you have to save it on your computer first, before Vista will treat it as a proper document. So right click on your attachment and chose Save as and it should automatically go into your Documents folder.

What's hard for me here, is I don't have Vista on my computer. So all I can suggest is my experience with Xp and what info I can get of the internet.

Anyway after he saved it to his hard drive, double-clicking on it to open it gave him the option to chose a program to open the file. Why Windows Vista don't seem to automatically associate .doc with wordpad, anyone's guess what goes through the minds of the people at Microsoft sometimes.

Even when He managed to get it open, it was a jumbled mess. Either it got corrupted or my guess it was created in a different word processor and the formatting just didn't carry over to wordpad.

I later sent him an e-mail with a link to Microsoft Word Viewer which allows you to view and print up but not edit, any number of different document formats, even if you do not have the proper Word Processor on your system.

Microsoft Word Viewer Its 25MB in size. or try http://tinyurl.com/25keg8
