Proxy Loopback

Oct 20 2005

I spent all day trying to get my internet connection to work through my network.

Just a refresher:

HOST:

CLIENT:

I have a cable internet connection and both computers are joined with a cross-over cable.

I recently lost my internet connection on my second computer. I kept getting errors like: 'Does not support loopback URL localhost:4001ym/5meen_us.....and a bunch of numbers and letters that made as much sense.

Anyway I did everything I could think of on my Client computer to get the internet working again and no such luck. I assumed the problem was on #2.

I have had this setup now for a few years but all of a sudden - it was gone.

After checking for adware, virus, and the like, uninstalling and reinstalling the winsock files, even went so far as formating the hard drive and reinstalling everything. But to my surprise, I kept getting the same error message when I tried to go online.

At that point I was convinced that the problem was not on my client computer anymore but either with my wires or something was wrong on computer #1. I did not suspect any problems because the internet was working fine on my host.

I wondered if my proxy server might be corrupted and was going to uninstall and reinstall it. But I decided to check for adware and spyware first using a program called Hijackthis - http://216.180.233.162/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe. I noticed an unusal proxy setting set up for Internet Explorer. I could of went to the Internet Options and disable the proxy through it but I decided to use Hijackthis to fix it.

Problem solved.

I remember now installing a program (which I uninstalled) that changed the Internet Explorer settings. I never noticed or paid attention to it because I don't use it. I am a 'Mozilla' fan.

Removing the proxy setting on computer #1 allowed me to connect again through computer #2.

I had an experience like this before when I disabled IE on computer #1 by setting up a false proxy. (of course, that time it was on purpose).

It seems that when I connect through a proxy on my client computer it seems to have to run throug 'Internet Explorer' on my host computer.

Go figure.

Bad Wires

Oct 21 2005

My sister decided to switch computers. From a P2-300 mhz to a P2-800 mhz. They also have a cable connection.

After upgrading there computer from Win98 to WinME, they could not get online. I wasn't sure what the problem was. It was a fresh install - so there was no adddware, spyware or virus. There where no problems indicated with the hardware.

I ran a few tests anyway. Unistalled and reinstalled a few commponents. But nothing. Until I could figure out what was going on I suggested that they setup and use their old computer. So I did. And discovered I couldn't get online with their old one either.

I was sure then that its wasn't either computer but a bad connection with the modem. They had problems with it before. So I replaced the wire that connects the modem to the computer. Sure enough, it worked best kind.

Why am I telling you this. Because I learned how to fix computers from my own experiences first and someone elses second.
