Managing Opera Bookmarks

I have a problem managing my bookmarks. This is a bit hard for me to explain ...so bear with me.

If you go to bookmark a page in Opera - Bookmarks > Bookmark Page - then you will see the field Create In - It's set at Bookmarks - we will call this the Bookmark Root Folder.

So that's where they go, but, like me you probably have had a few bookmarks over the years and started placing them in folders.

I like to occasionally go to my bookmarks, re-arrange, delete them or whatever. I have run into a minor problem. So I click on Bookmarks - Manage Bookmarks and I get a two pane explorer type window.

A list of Folders is on the left side - the only way to see the bookmarks outside these folders or in the bookmarks root folder is to click on the empty white space under the last folder on the list.

I have 24 folders now (counting the trash can) - I had 25 but with this number there is NO WHITE SPACE under it to access the ROOT folder. I had to delete one folder (after moving the bookmarks to another) to create a space to click on to access the bookmarks not in folders.

There is no scroll bar - but I tried a test and bookmarked a couple of more pages each into a new folder. A scroll bar appears to access the extra folders on the list but still the root is not accessible.

Found a solution myself. In the bookmark manager window I just kept clicking on the word Name in the top left hand column - where the folders are listed - eventually the bookmarks lined up with the missing root bookmarks at the end of the list (on the right hand column) - so I can do now what needs to be done.

Otherwise the only solution is to limit the number of Bookmark Folders to 23 plus the trashcan for 24. This leaves a space on the bottom of the list to access the root folder.

I posted this info at the Opera support forum - the only suggestion was to hold down on ctrl and click on a highlighted folder to deselect it. It seems to work.

Streaming Video Sound But No Picture - Video Acceleration

My Uncle was trying to view some streaming videos on his computer. The sound came through OK but the picture screen remained black. Streams from sites like Youtube worked perfectly. It was just this one site.

My first hunch - lack of proper codecs. So I went to my favourite source of codecs
www.free-codecs.com/ - downloaded and installed the klite codec pack - but still no luck.

Then I assumed it might be a flash/shockwave/java problem. Everything seemed to be in order. My Uncle sent a letter to the site and received a reply about active X controls. After checking it out and still nothing I decided to try one more thing.

I tried adjusting the video acceleration - Right-click on your desktop then Click on Properties then Click on the Settings tab then the Advanced button then Click on the Troubleshoot tab. Click on and hold down on the Slider

When you adjust the slider a message usually pops up asking if you want to accept the changes. Just accept.

Sure enough it did the job.

Pogo Chat

A woman called me because she couldn't use the chat function at the Pogo
www.pogo.com/home/home.do game site. She did some research herself and discovered it might be the AVG toolbar interfering. She was instructed to disable it. She didn't know how.

Here's how:

Here's a good site to show you how to do it.
www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2612/ie7_remove_disable_add_ons_activex_plugins/.

Basically go to Tools > Manage Addons > Enable or Disable Addons - Find all listed with AVG in the name, click on each, one at a time and then the word Disable. In this case there was 2 AVG items listed.

Problem Solved.

Printing Problems

That same woman also had a printing problem. When she tried to print up a page - she said a dozen would come out. I came across a small batch file that solved that problem.

It's available from: www.bradkovach.com/printflush/.

Or just follow these instructions:

Open Command Prompt -

  • Win XP - Start > Run > type in cmd hit enter
  • Win Vista - Start > type cmd from the list at the top then right-click and chose Run as administrator

Then type each command one line at a time, hit the enter key after every line:

    net stop spooler
    del /Q /F /S "%systemroot%\System32\Spool\Printers\*.*"
    net start spooler

    Problem solved.

    Avira Remover

I'm a firm believer in Avira Antivirus - but sometimes during install things go wrong. It's recommended, in these cases to uninstall and reinstall again. And even that don't work sometimes. In the case of Avira they have a small utility to completely remove their program for a complete uninstall to make it easier to reinstall after.

    Animated Desktops

I've wrote about this before, how to set up Animated gifs on your desktop. jan2007.html

I recently formatted my computer and decided to set up an Animated GIF, but it wouldn't work. I had the same problem last time.

Some research on the internet guided me to do the following:

Click Start, Run and type regedit and hit enter

Navigate to the following keys by clicking on the little plus sign by each key (like folders).

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer

    and

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer

Delete the two values NoActiveDesktopChanges & NoActiveDesktop in the right-pane. They did not exist on mine.

Then navigate to the following keys:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ ActiveDesktop

    and

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ ActiveDesktop

Delete the value NoComponents in both the above locations.

In my case the keys named ActiveDesktop did not exist so I just recreated them by right-clicking on the key Policies and choosing the Option to create a New Key.

    Non Booting Laptop

A guy came to me with his laptop, he said the screen went black when turned on. I assumed it was just corrupted video drivers until I examined the laptop and realized it was not even booting up.

The power would come on and nothing. No BIOS info no Booting up what-so-ever. No BEEPS to indicate any errors.

So online I went and was amazed to discover that it seemed to be a common problem. This laptop was a Acer - http://support.acer.com/ - so I the company an email. I was surprised when they actually replied in a timely manner (according to their support site...within 24 hours.

    Their recommendation:

Please perform a power reset. To perform a power reset please go through the steps.

    1. Disconnect the AC adapter from the laptop.
    2. Remove the battery.
    3. Press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds then release it. (You will not see anything happen)
    4. Connect the AC Adapter to the laptop. Make sure the AC Adapter is plugged in.
    5. Turn the computer on as normal.
    6. Once Windows loads, insert the battery.

I came across this solution on numerous other sites as well...but unfortunately it did not work. Try it a few times just to be sure.

The only other suggestion found online was to flash the BIOS.

    Various suggestions here: http://tinyurl.com/6lwv9r

Here's what I tried. I went to acer support and searched for updated drivers. This is the link to the Canadian version of Acer. They all function the same. http://tinyurl.com/cuavzo - once there in the box click on Notebook then another box will open.

Then click on your Product Line - The name of the laptop I was trying to repair was Acer Extensa 4230 so I clicked on Extensa. Then another box that allowed me to pick the model - Extensa 4230.

Then a final box opens and under it a list of all updated available drivers. I wanted the BIOS driver - so I clicked on the BIOS tab and downloaded the newstest version (not sure what version was on the laptop originally).

The file I downloaded was called: BIOS_Acer_1.24_A_A.zip - uncompressed it contained two files: JALA0124.exe and readme.txt.

The JALA0124.exe is Windows based, it will only run in Windows - so I used 7zip www.7-zip.org/ - to uncompress it (don't double-click on it).

I just right-clicked on the JALA0124.exe file, held down on it, and dragged it to a blank space under it in Windows Explorer. A menu came up with a number of uncompression options. I usually chose the option to uncompress within a folder of the same name. (Extract to JALA0124\)

So I ended up with a folder called JALA0124. Inside where these files:

    iscflashx64.sys
    JALA0124.fd
    platform.ini
    Ding.wav
    InsydeFlash.exe
    iscflash.dll
    iscflash.sys

Then I just burned only the JALA0124.fd to a CD-R.

Then I was supposed to put in the CD, turn of power, disconnect the power cord, take out the battery, Hold the FN and ESCAPE keys down, Plug in the power cord, Press the power button while still holding the keys. This is supposed to FORCE the computer to load the .FN file from the CD and write it to the BIOS of the machine.

When the laptop powers up, you can release the keys; leave the laptop for 20-30 minutes if needed. The computer will turn itself off once complete. Once finished re-insert the battery, power on the laptop.

One hour, two hours...4 hours latter...The laptop kept trying to access the CD but it just wouldn't spin up. I also tried this with a USB Thumb Drive, still nothing.

It was suggested online that sometimes this is a motherboard problem. I found a quick and easy way to determine if the Motherboard was working.

Just remove the memory chip form the laptop and start up the computer. Caution: REMOVE THE BATTERY FIRST!! On this laptop it was the center compartment on the bottom. With the memory chip removed, replace the battery, power up the laptop. If the motherboard is working properly, you should hear a series of beeps. In my case nothing.

I'm now convinced the Motherboard is gone. The only good news I have to tell the owner is that when I registered with Acer to get support, I was informed that the laptop was still under warranty.
